“My language is understood throughout the world”
– Joseph Haydn
“Perfect, mature music making. Under the artistic leadership of the violinist Andrea Nikolić, WISE is aiming for an atmospheric and imaginative programming!”
Through its unparalleled versatility, innovative programming and highly acclaimed performances, the Vienna-based WISE is quickly emerging as one of the finest and exciting international ensembles that the musical capital of the world has to offer.
With a musical range spanning four centuries, the ensemble is equally at home with historically informed as well as contemporary playing techniques. Furthermore, WISE is known for its highly flexible line-up, where virtually unlimited combinations ranging from small chamber music groups to a full orchestral sound are part of the ensemble’s repertoire. In addition, through its music, WISE considers it its mission to bridge geographic, socio-economic and cultural gaps as well as to contribute to a diverse community through strengthening intercultural understanding.
Founded in Vienna in 2013 by musicians from all around the world, WISE is under the artistic leadership of the Viennese violinist of Bosnian-Croatian descent Andrea Nikolić. Since 2017, the ensemble has made its new home at the Bank Austria Salon of the Old Vienna City Hall – “Altes Rathaus”. Their season includes 10 yearly concerts with artistically and socially engaging concepts. From “WienTegriert”, “Is it WISE…?”, “The power of 12” to “WISE Rebel 2020”, each season has its own unique story. The Rebel year 2020 will see the celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven as well as the Contemporary music festival “CRO-ArT”, connected to the Croatian presidency of the Council of the EU.
Aside from the regular concert season, WISE is active as a touring ensemble and takes pride in diverse collaborations with contemporary composers and performers, as well as interdisciplinary artists. Most recently with the ExilArte Center, Nataša Veljković & her 5 Seasons Cycle, Johanna Doderer (world premiere of her piece 193+ for the 40th anniversary of the UN headquarters Vienna), Meinhard Rüdenauer (“Concerto al Paradiso” world premiere), international congresses in the Austria Centre and many more.
One of the highpoints of the ensemble include a highly successful tour in April 2017 where they performed the St. John’s Passion by J. S. Bach together with the renowned Arnold Schoenberg Choir directed by Erwin Ortner to great acclaim. Furthermore, the group has been the ensemble in residence every year at the Vareš Classic Festival – International Chamber Music Festival in Bosnia-Herzegovina since its inception and will be celebrating its 8th successive performance at the 2020 edition.
First CD with the contemporary works written for and premiered by WISE is coming out in 2020.
